Hiking tip circular hike Gruttenhütte

1. The “hard facts”

We start with some important information about this hike:

  • The tour covers a distance of 14 kilometers.
  • There is an 890-meter elevation gain to conquer.
  • The highest point along the hiking trail—the Gruttenhütte—is at 1,620 m.
  • Since the walk alone will take about 6 hours, be sure to start your hike early!
  • Sturdy hiking boots with good traction and breathable hiking clothing are a must!
  • For even greater safety, hiking poles are recommended!

2. Through the forest and across meadows toward the Wilder Kaiser

You start your mountain tour at the Going information office and follow the Goinger Hausbach stream to the Raiffeisenbank. Turn left here, cross the underpass and follow Schwendterweg to the left until you reach the farmhouses. Here you are on a sunny plateau that offers you a magnificent view of the Kaiser Mountains! Now follow the path – always towards the Wilder Kaiser! At the next junction, turn left to the Tannbichl parking lot, pass the barrier and continue along the forest road – step by step towards the imposing mountain world. Eventually you will pass a fountain trough fed by the Wilder Kaiser springs and finally reach a path through the forest.

3. Don’t forget: a well-deserved break is part of the fun of hiking!

Shortly before the Gaudeamushütte, you will reach a clearing from where you can admire the Kaiser Mountains in all their majestic splendor! Plan a stop at the Gaudeamushütte and fortify yourself with a few Tyrolean delicacies and homemade cakes!

4. Ready for the final climb?

Now comes the final leg of your tour—the ascent along the “Klammlweg” to the highest mountain hut: the Gruttenhütte. Adventurers, take note: The Klammlweg is a narrow trail—there are sections secured with ropes! You’ll also need to navigate a ladder about 2 meters long and some iron rungs! Anyone choosing this route must have a head for heights and be sure-footed!

From the rustic mountain hut, situated on a rocky ridge, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Kaiser massif and the Tyrolean mountains! On a clear day, you can even see the Großglockner and the Großvenediger!

5. Time to Head Down

If you are now making your way back, start in the direction of Wochenbrunner Alm. Before you reach the forest path, you have to cross a few scree fields. The next highlight is a game reserve. Take a little time to observe, perhaps you will discover some shy forest dwellers! The path now continues downhill towards the former Brennhütte and on through the forest to the Blattlkapelle chapel. Now turn right again, past the Blattlbauern to the Blattlhof, where you will reach the other side of the road through the underpass. The last few meters, the Auweg, you are accompanied by the Goinger Hausbach and finally you reach the starting point of your hike.

6. Our tip for those who aren’t quite so adventurous:

A hiking trail also leads from the Wochenbrunner Alm up to the Gruttenhütte. You can reach this magnificent viewpoint without a via ferrata.
